Ben reflects..........

Pre-Camp Reflections:
Read the introduction, objectives and theoretical background to the project and then answer the following questions:
  • What interests you about this project?
  • What interests me about this project is the fact that we can find a renewable source of energy to complement the use of fossil fuels that are quickly running in this world. Another thing that interests me is the fact that this is something new and not thought of before.

  • What do you want to learn by doing this project?
  • I want to learn the different ideas, theories and practicals about new topics in science and technology to further broaden my knowledge and horizon.

  • What questions do you have about this project?
  • Not much, since I have not dwelled deeper into this topic yet.

  • What do you personally want to achieve by the end of the project?
  • I want to gain the knowledge if different ideas, theories and practicals about new topics in science to expand my horizon about the world.

Plenary Session (Day 1)
  • Key Learning Points:
  • Plenary Session by Prof Kerry Sieh: Technology can be used to change the landscape, not only improve but also save people’s lives.

  • IT for Animation by Prof Seah Hock Soon: Technology can be used to create media that can show and tell many things.

  • Innovative Breakthroughs in Nano-Science and Nanotechnology by Prof Ma Jan: Technology is our future and one should not doubt the bounds of technology, rather invest in defining and furthering the boundaries of this technology. Also, one should be innovative as anything is possible.

  • New Questions:
  • What are the boundaries that technology can reach?

  • What are the negative effects of technology?

  • How does technology develop and improve so fast? (Newer technology like drilling machines must be improved to dig deeper and find new minerals, to improve current technology, which is impossible to improve after a while.)

My Personal Reflection / Accomplishments (Day 3)
  • Discuss how the projects has deepened your understanding and broadened your awareness of the selected discipline: This projects deepened my understanding and broadened my awareness greatly through informing us about need to conserve and reuse things to preserve this environment. This environment would not last forever, and we need to find new methods to ensure that our home - this Earth, continues to function, and hence we created mechanisms which allow viable sources of energy, such as the rain, kinetic power of the bicycle and the conservation and saving of energy by sorting out the different bottles - steel, aluminum, plastic and glass.

  • Discuss what you understand now about this discipline that you were unaware of at the beginning: Things that I was unaware of, of this discipline are the sources whereby the mechanisms draw energy from. Examples of this sources that were used in the mechanisms today were rain, kinetic energy of a bicycle pedaling and the preservation of the need to use energy to create bottles. I did not know about such sources, being drawn into only more common alternative sources such as solar, hydroelectric and electric energy. I realised we could use literally anything we look at in the real world, as every thing has energy - from grass to wind, from oceans to the earth, one must just know how to harvest such energy.

  • Discuss how you can connect what you have learned from doing this project to what you are learning at school: I can connect what I have learned from doing this project to what I am learning in school, as everything in life is interconnected. Maths to science, science to technology, technology to this project. By understanding the ideas of energy transference and conservation of energy, one would understand the topics thought at school better as with knowledge of one topic, a person could apply such knowledge to help in projects/works of another topic.

  • Describe how you can apply what you have learned from doing this project: I can apply this knowledge from this projects as mentioned above, I can connect such knowledge to have an easier understanding or deeper understanding of other topics.

  • At the end of the project, some new questions I have include:
  • What are some other ways to conserve energy?
  • How to make everyone follow this way of conserving energy?
  • How to make this solutions effective?
  • How to come out with such effective solutions?

  • 6. My Aspirations: To be very rich, with a wonderful and beautiful family that I love can spend time with. Also, travel the world with my parents, spouse and children. Right now, I want to study and do to the maximum of my abilities, as I know that I can achieve much better than the standard I am currently performing at.
